You should also be sure to center them on whatever space or line they occur.

STEM DIRECTION

notes which occur below the middle staff line have stems that go up.

notes which occur above the middle staff line have stems that go down.

notes with stems occurring on the middle staff line can go either up or down depending on what the next note is.

notes which use ledger lines should have their stems reaching to the middle staff line.

Your usual stem should be almost an octave in length.

FLAGS

Flags always lean to the right, no matter what direction the stem goes in.
